The Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant, which is more than a contract. Covenants always express a relationship between persons. The marriage covenant refers to the relationship between the husband and wife, a permanent union of persons capable of knowing and loving each other and God. The celebration of marriage is also a liturgical act, appropriately held in a public liturgy at church. Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy.

Marriage Process at Christ Cathedral
Updated 9/10/26
Step 1: Before You Start — Eligibility Check
Confirm all of the following before requesting a date:
- Wedding will take place on a Friday or Saturday at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., or 2:30 p.m.
- Requested date falls within the current or next calendar year (e.g., in 2026, only 2026–2027 dates are open; 2028 dates open in March 2027)
- Both parties are either two baptized Catholics, or one baptized Catholic + one non-Catholic
- If either party was previously married (civil or in the Church), that marriage has been annulled by a Roman Catholic Tribunal— if not started, contact a local priest now; a date cannot be issued until this is resolved
- Do not book a reception venue until the Christ Cathedral date is confirmed
Available worship spaces for marriage: Christ Cathedral, Chapel in the Sky, St. Callistus Chapel, or the Arboretum. Compare capacity/cost in the Wedding Guidelines. Questions → contact the Liturgical Administrator, Ana Guardado-Chavez.
Step 2: Which Process Applies to You?
Question: Does the bride or groom currently live within the Diocese of Orange? (Parish Boundary Map)
| If… | Follow… |
|---|---|
| Bride or groom lives in the Diocese of Orange | In-Diocese Process |
| Both live outside the Diocese of Orange | Out-of-Diocese Process |
Note: Participation in Christ Cathedral’s Marriage Preparation Course is mandatory for couples following the In-diocese process. Learn about Christ Cathedral’s Marriage Preparation Course Here.
